Where Styled Text Works on Discord (and Where It Doesn't)
This trips up more people than anything else, so it is worth covering before you pick a style. Discord changed its username system in 2023. The @username now only accepts lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. Unicode is rejected outright, so no styled text will ever save there.
What does accept styled text: your global display name, your per-server nickname, role names, your About Me bio, and ordinary messages. Server names accept it too. That covers almost everything people actually want, but the handle itself stays plain, and any guide telling you to style your username is out of date.
Channel names are their own case. Discord force-lowercases them and replaces spaces with hyphens, and many Unicode characters get stripped or mangled in the process. Test one channel before renaming a whole category.

- Preview Fonts: Every style renders your own text live. Use the size slider to check how it reads small, since member-list names display smaller than this preview.
- Copy Your Favorite: Tap the style block to copy it straight to your clipboard.
- Paste on Discord: Open User Settings, then Profile, and paste into the Display Name field. For a single server, right-click your name in the member list and choose Change Nickname instead.
One thing that catches people out in messages: Discord reads Markdown, so asterisks, underscores, tildes and backticks in your pasted text will trigger formatting instead of showing up as characters. If your styled text includes those symbols and comes out looking wrong, that is why. Names and nicknames are unaffected, since Markdown only applies in messages.

Which Styles Break, and Where
Being straight about the limits saves you a frustrating afternoon. Not every style is equally safe, and the difference comes down to which Unicode block the characters come from.
The safest are Bold, Italic, Sans-Serif, Monospace, and Double Struck. These live in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which almost every system font covers. Small Capital and Bubble are close behind. The riskiest are Ancient, which uses cuneiform, and Old Italic, which uses an extinct Italic script. Both are real Unicode, but many devices have no glyphs for them and show empty boxes instead. Symbolic, Tribal, and Historical sit in the middle, using Canadian Aboriginal and Cherokee syllabics with patchy coverage on older Android builds.
Two Discord-specific things. A styled display name is hard for others to type, so people will struggle to mention you unless they click your name or use the autocomplete. And some servers run moderation bots that flag or block unusual Unicode in names, which is why a nickname sometimes gets reset without explanation.
Testing Before You Commit
A quick check worth two minutes. Paste your styled name in, save it, then post a message in a quiet channel and look at how it renders in the member list rather than just the settings field.
Better still, check it on a second device or ask someone in the server to screenshot it. Your device may have glyphs installed that theirs lacks, and blank boxes only appear on the client missing the character. Desktop and mobile Discord also use different font stacks, so a name that looks right on one can break on the other.
